The last of the three Muscadet sub-appellations is Muscadet Coteaux de la Loire. Officially established in 1936, Muscadet Coteaux de la Loire includes 24 villages spread across the Loire-Atlantique and Maine-et-Loire departments.
Here, the soil has a high concentration of schist. As in Muscadet Sèvre et Maine and Muscadet Côtes de Grandlieu, wines from Muscadet Coteaux de la Loire can be labeled sur lie if they meet the specifications outlined by the AOC for aging on the dead yeast cells following fermentation.
