Winemaker Wednesday: Arnaud Saget

Welcome to a series we will be hosting on our blog called Winemaker Wednesday, where winemakers present their wines and their property in their words.  These are all winemakers whose wines you can find in the United States, and below each post we will give you some ideas of where you can find them! Our first profile is of Arnaud Saget, who runs Vignobles Guy Saget with his brother, Laurent.

Winemaker Wednesday: Arnaud Saget

Tell us about your property (how long it has been in your family, how long you have been making wine there, the size, any growing philosophy you might have):

Arnaud: Our family has been working a vineyard in Pouilly sur Loire for nine generations. In 1976, the estate underwent change under my father, Jean-Louis Saget.  We started out with 4 hectares, but have expanded now to 400 hectares. We now own six estates in the Loire Valley, making us fully-fledged specialists of this wine making region!

In addition to its properties, we source about 1/3 of our production from producers with whom we have long term and strong relationships.  This allows us to offer a full range of Loire Valley wines like Pouilly-Fumé, Sancerre, Vouvray, Rosé d’Anjou and Chinon.

We currently produce about 4,5 million bottles a year, exported in 35 countries worldwide. Laurent, my brother, and I will do our utmost to continue the know-how and the quality of Guy Saget wines through the years.

If you do not come from a wine making background, how did you come to the wine business?

I had the chance to grow up in the family business and to see all these passionate people working with my father. I cannot remember having any other idea than working here with them and perpetuating the tradition.

What is your favorite vintage and cuvee from your own property and why?

One of the best vintage is for me 2008 for its balance and concentration. We had the chance to have many different vintages for the past years and 07 was also very interesting for other reasons, primarily for the expression of the minerality but also for the complexity it develops after few years in bottle. We recently tasted our Pouilly-Fumé Domaine Saget “Les Roches” 1985 which was absolutely fantastic, still very fresh and full of life.

Editor’s Note: The wines mentioned in the above post (although not the 1985 Pouilly-Fume!) are available to order at the following stores
Total Wine and More (Various Locations)
Gordon’s Fine Wine and Liquors
Saratoga Wine and Spirits
If the above stores are unable to ship to your state, we suggest using wine-searcher.com to locate a store near you that carries the wine.
